Trotting the Asian Way at Borobudur, Bali and Jogjakarta

Trotting the Asian Way at Borobudur, Bali and Jogjakarta

It might seem surprising but it is a fact that if one has to search for the oldest and the most archaic of mythological Hindu temples anywhere in the world, the grandest and best specimens are found not here in India, but in South East part of the Asian continent i.e. countries such as Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia. Of these countries, Central Java and Bali regions of Indonesia can boast of the oldest and the most important cultural heritage sites bundled with the archaic and the pious. The most captivating, ear and eye catching first sites in Central Java are the sights and sounds of Hindu gods and goddesses in a unique and picturesque spectacle not witnessed by the human eye anywhere else in the world. Though, older temples are known to exist there and elsewhere, the most famous of  [...]

Annapurna: the best trek in the world

Annapurna: the best trek in the world

It is without a doubt the best trek in the long distance category. Nepal is a good mix of pristine nature and rich culture. The terrain and its beautiful landscapes are constantly changing and fill my eyes with tears of joy. The thrill and excitement that cover the air cannot be justified by mere words. This stunning experience is only intensified by the dangerous throng la pass. We shot out cheers of joy as we made safely across the pass. At 5426m can be termed insignificant by many but still a danger. Annapurna region trek was our choice of a comfortable trek without the usual rigors and hardships. This time we didn’t necessarily want a sense of achievement an exciting and yet challenging walk into the wild corners of nature was more than enough. An 18 day trek was sadly not enough  [...]

Kayaking in Alaskan waters

Kayaking in Alaskan waters

We found adventure waiting for us in Alaska’s Inside Passage. The flat terrain with sheets of ice distorted the distance and would fool people with the misty fog that fills the morning air. A scene right out of the movie “free whilly” played in my mind as I could hear the characteristic blow of the orcas through the mist and I felt they were nearby. The mornings here in this winter land can be calm and yes, cold to the bone. Sunlight is blanked out by the mist and the beams make it through sometime. The silence and peace can be calming but deafening. An eagle flying solo makes itself heard through its piercing cry as it dives in for the fish. It feels divine kayaking with my loyal companion, my heart beat as it goes on a rampage when a sound breaks the quite air. Then all of a  [...]

A Guarda, Spain’s unsung jewel

A Guarda, Spain’s unsung jewel

There is something about the place, and I cannot put my finger on it, that leaves with a distinct feeling of sleepiness. Not that leaden feeling that weighs down your eyelashes and dulls all of your collectiveness, but more of a calm that is so omnipresent that it slows you down along with everything else. And here in A Guarda, in Galicia at the toe of Pontevedra, it is as if time slows down and a sanguine laziness seeps from every pore of the little municipality’s ethos. Even as tourism starts to take off here, the town’s original 10,000 inhabitants still look to fishing as the cornerstone of their economy. Fishing How appropriate that that most leisurely of Sunday activities, that bastion of all things delightfully backward should be the plinth on which this town was built. The  [...]

Geoagiu Bai

Geoagiu Bai

The first question to strike my mind when I set foot here, the first question of many was why the hell is this place so off the map? I often hear that if there is a god at all, he is not merciful and kind and that he created humans as a means of amusement, puppets on a string dropped on a stage where there is no hope and no joy to be had. To all those people, I have two words to say…“ Geoagiu Bai”. No, I haven’t taken leave of my senses, yet. It’s just that I couldn’t believe how much cajoling and coaxing it took for me to finally come here. My rationale was that if it was so splendid, how come I had (or almost anyone else) heard about it yet? That probably explains why no one knows how to pronounce its name, barring Madalina whose tongue it rolls off sounding like freshly picked  [...]

Kayaking in Santa Barbara and its Channel Islands

Kayaking in Santa Barbara and its Channel Islands

The surfing lifestyle has made a long lasting impression on the California coastline to the north of Los Angeles. This has been the case since the famous sixties. But now the tide seems to be turning in the favor of different recreational activities. That does not deter determined surfers who still manage to wake up at the crack of dawn to catch the first waves of the ocean blue.
